it? >> let's talk about the numbers, john. mitt romney still getting post debate bounce. you can't say any more that debates don't matter. the new cnn poll, poll of polls, mitt romney has a slight lead with likely voters, 48% to 47%. his performance certainly showed that you can't say it doesn't matter anymore. there is no bigger swing state than ohio, where you are. >> reporter: the history tells you no republican has ever been elected president without winning the state of ohio. can you do the math and have romney win without this state? yes. is it likely? no. before the debate some polls had him down as many as nine points in ohio. new cnn poll row leased last night has him down four, 51-47. another group, american research group show ed romney up a point in ohio. no question. just like in the national polls, a bit of a boost. romney is up in the suburbs, up among independents. there's signs of strength here from romney, we can tell you there are a few soft spots he needs to work on. >> john king in ohio, covering the debates as well. thank you very much. watch live coverage o

's vice presidential debate, same old, same old. mitt romney is setting the barlow for his running mate, paul ryan. governor romney sat down for an exclusive interview with our wolf blitzer yesterday. before we talk about that, i want to listen specifically to what the governor had to say about expectations, wolf. here he is. >> are you confident, governor, that paul ryan will take on joe biden thursday night the way you took on the president? >> you know, i don't know how paul will deal with this debate. obviously, the vice president has done, i don't know, 15 or 20 debates during his lifetime. experienced debater. this is, i think, paul's first debate. i may be wrong. he may have done something in high school, i don't know. it will be a new experience for paul. but i'm sure he'll do fine. >> so wolf, here's my question. does anybody at this stage of the game, one week later, think that setting low expectations actually helped mitt romney in his win over president obama, or was it all about performance on that stage? >> there's no doubt that mitt romney did a very good job in the debat

with ryan tonight and how that's going to go after the last presidential debate. want to talk about that. mitt romney's big win in last week's debate, of course, receiving now about, we understand, in the polls how long it's going to last, we really don't know. that question, of course, could be answered tonight. we're talking about this one and only vice presidential debate from our senior political analyst and national editorial director and, ron, you and i were at those vice presidential debates. last go round back in 2008 when a record 70 million people watch that night. there was so much excitement, and i think there was a lot of curiosity, how sarah palin was going to go up against joe biden and a lot that came out of that debate. what do we make of the expectations tonight between biden and now ryan? >> well, first of all, i would be surprised if the audience was as big as it was in 2008 when sarah palin was a political and cultural phenomenon. the romney-obama debate received an enormous audience, even bigger than we expected. i was at the last debate in danville, the vice presid

of this is starting to become some news today. mitt romney in the last couple of days has been talking about former navy s.e.a.l. glen doherty who was killed in -- >> got a little emotional. >> that's right. he got a little emotional yesterday in iowa. he told the story last night, told it again this afternoon, glen doherty died in that consulate attack in benghazi last month. i have to tell you that the mother of that navy s.e.a.l. has asked the romney campaign to stop telling that story. she said in an interview with whdh tv in boston, she doesn't touch romney and she shouldn't make her son's death part of his political agenda. i reached out to andrea saul with the romney campaign and she said that they respect the wishes of mrs. doherty and the campaign confirms to cnn he will no longer be telling that story. so it is interesting to see, you know, mitt romney sort of making some adjustments to his campaign speeches. some of them going over well, some not going over so well, brooke. >> so they will be respecting the mother's wishes to please stop telling the story about her fallen son. jim acosta

and many other viewers out there may be confused on where he stands on this issue. mitt romney, if you listen carefully to what he said, he talks about legislation. well, that's very different as you and i know, brooke, from supporting nominees to the supreme court who would outlaw abortion, who would overturn roe v. wade. that's very different than supporting legislation that would try to do that in congress. and so i think that might be the distinction there that mitt romney is going for. as you mentioned, a few moments ago, he has evolved on this issue over the years and romney has not shied away from that. he admitted back in 2004 that when he was governor of massachusetts that he had had a conversion on this issue. it was when he was basically told about what happened to embryos during stem cell research, that is when he says he had an epiphany on the issue of life and from then on forward he has been pretty staunchly anti-abortion. >> so, let me jump in, because you any, you say distinction, we could call it knnuance, that th nuance on this abortion issue is cropping up as the pr

on mitt romney's changing stance on abortion. plus, the wives are more popular than their husbands. could they help sway voters? we're talking about a sfoer out of florida where a parking garage has collapsed trapping several people. rescue crews are on the scene in florida. we don't know exactly how many people are trapped, but one person has been taken to the hospital. a spokeswoman for miami dade fire and rescue says the parking garage was under construction when it collapsed. they're calling it a pancake collapse because the floors fell on one another from top to bottom. we'll, of course, update you as we get more information there in florida. our affiliates there helping us out. >>> now to a huge affirmative action case. it's a student that claims she was denied admission to the university of text technical because she is white. that student abigail noel fisher, that's her right there, sued the school after being rejected in 2008. fisher says u.t.'s admissions policy unfairly favors minority students. the school says it only considers race in some cases to insure diversity on campus,

talking points can you get into one segment? >> she was pretty good. she was like a politician. >> yeah. well, i will tell you the big difference right now is that you can tell mitt romney is having fun. that's what you saw at the debate. you saw a mitt romney who was enjoying being there and brought his a game and you saw president obama who looked pained, looked like he would rather be having a root canal than being at that debate. and, you know, carol, the thing is, we are now -- before, we could say to a candidate, tell us what you think. today, we are also part of the oprah winfrey, dr. phil generation. we also want to know what they feel, who they are. we want to like them. you know, so i think it is very important that mitt romney is showing more of his personal side. we do know a lot about president obama. that's one of his advantages. you know, we know all about his daughters, his dog, his grandma, his mom, his wife. and i think it's a very good thing that mitt romney is also showing us the real mitt romney. >> except for the dog part. i know that was a low blow. i couldn't hel
